Purpose
Provide hands-on conservation education for students in
the natural resources and agricultural fields. Besides having a meaningful
learning experience, students have an opportunity to investigate a variety of
career fields while agencies have an opportunity to give their messages to a
captive audience.
Method
We try to provide 2-3 days in the Spring and
Fall to each school. We try to get a good mix between agriculture and natural
resources. Each day has 3-4 sessions lasting between 45-60 minutes. The students
break up into groups and rotate between the sessions. We try to get a good mix
of topics on any one day. Emphasis is placed on hands-on activities. NO LECTURES!
Partners
The local Conservation District Boards
sponsor the event. The RC&D Council coordinates the activities. The school
district provides transportation, students, supervision, and liability. Local
agriculture businesses and agencies volunteer land and presenters.
Benefit
Numerous teachers love it. Some teachers have
changed their lesson plans to enhance their curriculum. The Conservation
District has the opportunity
to promote their programs. For many farmers and ranchers, it is the first time
for them to tell their story.
* Contact RC&D and we will design a program that meets your needs. We can go
from one hour in the classroom to school yard investigations to field trips.
